Èze Village, France – A Town Perched On Top Of A Cliff Overlooking The Sea.
Exploring the beautiful small town sites in Èze, France
Nested in the south of France, perched on a peak high above the Mediterranean Sea and tucked away above a lush forest of trees, sits the beautiful little medieval town of Èze. This picturesque little town will win your heart with its old world charm, especially once you enjoy a stroll through the neatly tailored cobblestone and brick streets. Modernized little cozy shops and delightfully tasty restaurants are tucked away in little corners; enjoy getting lost and find new pockets throughout this little town.

Secluded in our own mountaintop villa, I had the pleasure of enjoying the sights and tastes of the south of France for a number of days. There is something pleasant about the south of France, I didn’t know how to describe. Was it the sound of the ocean, as the waves fizzled underneath the pebble beach’s or was it the personality of the towns with the inviting pastel provincial shutters and alure of freshly baked goods. Whatever it was, it’s the reason I fell in love with the provincial region the first time in 2016, and why I enjoyed falling in love with it all over again this past trip.
Mediterranean Garden (Jardin Exotique d’Eze)
The allure of this medieval town goes beyond just its rustic walls, as you make your way to its peak over 1400 ft above sea level (aka the old fort) in the heart of the city, your breathe will be taken away. Destroyed in 1706 by the sun king, Luis the 14th, the ruins of the old fort have come to breathe life again and in the best way. Now supporting its own exotic habitat the cactus/Mediterranean garden, it is home to a multitude of species of cactus collected from all around the world. I would say this is a 100% must do if you do have a chance to stop in this town, even if for a little while. Seriously, just look at those views! Just wow!
Restaurants With A View
Every time we go somewhere new, one of my favourite things to do it try all the food; and I mean a bit of everything. I ate multiple pastries a day all over Paris with no shame ( ok maybe a little shame), but how can you say no to a fresh apricot tart pulled from the oven just moments ago. The south of France was no different; just a cultural blend of French and Italian cuisine in the most magnificent of ways. Eze does not fall short on any of these claims, but how can anyone argue when this is what you get to see as you sip your Aperol Spritz?
Nietzsche’s Pathway
A beautiful mountainous path that zig-zags and traverses down the mountain cliffside from Eze Village and ends in Eze-Sur-Mer. It is a long and rocky path with beautiful scenery of the Mediterranean and Eze-Sur-Mer below. The walk uphill/downhill is long and takes approximately 45-50 minutes on a rocky uneven path ( assuming you have a moderate fitness level). If starting from Eze-Sur-Mer, don’t be fooled by the first 200 meters that are paved at the base, the remainder is steep uphill hiking and should not be done when raining.
Èze-Sur-Mer
Èze-Sur-Mer and Èze Village are NOT one and the same. Importantly, Èze-Sur-Mer is the part of the town that lies on the beach. I have seen many tourists make this mistake this past trip, so it’s good to take note as the medieval part of the city is on the mountaintop –a good 50 minute walk uphill. Be warned, look at the proper bus schedules or you will be out of luck, as most of the days it only runs until 6 pm and the time changes frequently. That being said, it is a nice place to enjoy yourself on the beach and walk along the large cobblestone rocks of the beach. Take a dip in the beautiful blues of the Mediterranean sea and wash all your worries away.
Other Things To See In Eze
Although we chose not to visit the Perfume factory in Eze Village, others have said it’s a nice place to visit and even mix your own perfume! Otherwise, enjoy your time in Eze feeling on top of the world.
