Harmonious Hues and Things to Do in Mykonos Greece
By: Alicja Kraska
Mykonos is one of those perfect little islands you can explore comfortably in a day or two, making it an excellent addition to a European or Greece travel itinerary. We had the pleasure of dropping by this island on our way through Greece and I am glad we did. The town of Mykonos is one of those photo drool worthy places, encapsulated in a perfectly crisp white base and highlighted with harmonious hues ranging from reds to purples to blues. And although the island may be small and not nearly as jam-packed with things to do as other towns and cities, I found it a great place to still enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace.
Get Up Early In The Morning To Photograph Little Venice
As a photographer, you know how important the early morning and late afternoon light is to your photography. Mykonos is definitely one of those towns I would vote for setting your alarm and getting up early. The morning blues in the town are outstanding if you want those magical hues in your photo. Definitely, head to Little Venice first thing as the crowds have not yet rolled in and the light in the rest of the town is still forgiving for a while in the morning.
Get Lost in the Town
It’s only instinct to want to use a map when visiting somewhere new, but I encourage you to put down the map and go get lost! The town is full of wondrous little nooks and you’ll have a hard time retracing your steps. But don’t fear, that is the joy of this mesmerizing little town.
Find Instagram hot spots, little clothing shops, souvenirs, beautiful floral arches, and small architectural details as you walk circles and circles through the mazes of Mykonos. But don’t be fooled, this town historically served a purpose, as the seemingly chaotic paths and whitewashed walls easily confused invaders and was a hideout for pirates and sailors alike. Definitely sounds like it fits the bill.

PS. If you are lucky, you might even be able to see Petros the Pelican. Seen parading around the town’s paths and soaking in the social media spotlight.
The Windmills
The one thing you cannot miss in Mykonos is the Windmills, they are iconic and hard to miss. The multiple windmills strew throughout the hills are a historical remnant of the city, that now serve as a popular tourist attraction. Get up early for a peaceful visit of the best known Kato Milli Windmills. The are pretty to see, but later in the day, as any popular attraction, there will be crowds. The view of the city is decent but not nearly as good as some of the higher individual mills up the slope (some of which do not have a name). Just Pick a path in town and start walking uphill, slowly through the maze, you will find them.

Good Eats & Nightlife
With beautiful destinations comes amazing food. And I don’t think anyone can decline a plate of Greek cuisine. Walking around Mykonos you will have an abundance of white-washed alley restaurants to choose from. If you are craving the classics or even something a little unique you are sure to find it. As the sun slowly sets, the town gives off a humble white glow. A different kind of life and light covers the town. Known informally as the Ibiza of Greece, it boasts some of the best clubs this side of the Isle. Whatever your taste, Mykonos has a little bit of flavour for everyone.

Beaches
The Island of Mykonos has a number of sandy beaches and beach clubs if you are in the mood for relaxation. Many are easily reachable within a short drive. I would recommend a scooter rental to trace the shoreline and see the landscape before picking a beach. Or go uphill for some nice panoramic shots. Some beaches are quieter than others, such as Paradise beach; known as a ‘party’ beach.
